KONSEP ADAB DALAM PEMIKIRAN AL-ATTAS DAN RELEVANSINYA TERHADAP PENDIDIKAN ISLAM KONTEMPORER

Abstract

The erosion of moral and intellectual discipline among Muslim learners in the contemporary era has prompted renewed scholarly attention toward foundational Islamic educational philosophy. This study examines the concept of adab as systematically theorized by Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas, one of the most influential Muslim thinkers of the twentieth century, and critically evaluates its relevance to the challenges confronting contemporary Islamic education. Employing a qualitative library research methodology, this investigation analyzes al-Attas' primary intellectual works alongside contemporary scholarly literature on Islamic educational philosophy and curriculum theory published within the last five years. The findings reveal that al-Attas' concept of adab constitutes a comprehensive metaphysical-educational framework that situates proper ordering of knowledge, self-discipline, and recognition of one's rightful place in the cosmic hierarchy as the foundational goal of Islamic education. The study concludes that the adab framework offers a theoretically coherent and practically relevant alternative to competency-based educational paradigms, particularly in addressing the crisis of knowledge fragmentation and the loss of moral-intellectual integrity in Muslim educational institutions.
