Abstract

The proliferation of social media platforms has generated a significant and rapidly escalating public mental health concern, particularly among adolescents and young adults in Muslim-majority societies, where patterns of compulsive and unregulated digital engagement increasingly mirror clinical addiction profiles. This study aims to examine the theoretical foundations, core techniques, and practical frameworks of Islamic counseling as an intervention approach for social media addiction, with particular attention to its applicability within Indonesian Muslim communities. Employing a qualitative library research methodology, this investigation systematically reviews and critically synthesizes primary Islamic scholarly sources alongside contemporary peer-reviewed literature on counseling psychology, addiction studies, and Islamic mental health. The findings establish that Islamic counseling, grounded in the principles of tawhid, tawbah, muhasabah, and zikrullah, offers a distinctive and therapeutically coherent framework for addressing the psychospiritual dimensions of social media addiction that secular counseling models frequently overlook. The study concludes that an integrative Islamic counseling model incorporating cognitive-behavioral elements within a spiritually anchored framework represents the most viable and culturally resonant intervention approach for this population.
