Abstract

The growing prevalence of mental health disorders across Muslim-majority societies has underscored an urgent need for counseling approaches that genuinely integrate the spiritual and theological dimensions central to Islamic anthropology, rather than merely appending religious content onto secular therapeutic frameworks. This study aims to systematically examine the multidimensional role of Islamic counselors in fostering spiritual mental health within Muslim communities, drawing upon both classical Islamic psychological thought and contemporary evidence-informed counseling scholarship. Employing a qualitative library research methodology, this investigation critically analyzes primary Islamic sources alongside peer-reviewed literature in Islamic psychology, pastoral counseling, and mental health. The findings identify five core functional roles of the Islamic counselor spiritual guide (murshid), empathic listener (musami'), therapeutic mentor (mu'allij nafsiy), community educator (murabbi), and ethical model (qudwah) and demonstrate that these roles operate most effectively when grounded in an integrated framework combining Quranic therapeutic principles with contemporary counseling competencies. The study concludes that the professionalization of Islamic counseling requires coherent theoretical frameworks, structured training pathways, and institutional recognition.
